I have added a page that shows how I cleaned my Sansa scroll wheel and corrected a problem with lack of control. Details in the link Sansa

how did you lift up the clips? they were so small my screwdriver wouldnt fit
I used a small screwdriver, like you would find in an eyeglass repair kit. That is about the only thing I found that would fit.
Thanks! I have an e270 and the scrollong was getting very frustrating. I was about to open it to see if I could clean the switch when I did a search and found your page. It was reassuring to see how simple it was! I used a cheap set of jeweler’s Phillips screwdrivers and found my needlenose tweezers to be very handy for picking up the tiny screws.
My Sansa scrolls like new again!
Thanks again. -Steve
Thank you! After months of playing Sansa roulette with a scroll wheel that hopped and skipped through the menus I was ready to abandon my e270. Sansa support was NO help and only offered a standard “re-install your software” suggestion. Your instructions and photographs were very helpful and my e270 works as good as new!
I’ve since purchased a skin for the device that I hope will help keep contaminates out. As a side benefit I’ve found it makes the directional buttons much easier to press. Thanks again for taking the time to post this very helpful information.
I will echo those who have posted before me – Thank you. After weeks of watching my Sansa go all Michael J Fox on me every time I moved the wheel, I finally have control back. Sandisk was of course, useless in this matter. So once again, thank you very much.
Hey Joustin-
I just wanted to thank you for this great tutorial. I just bought a Sansa e280r off of Craiglist, and the scrollwheel was completely shot. I stupidly didn’t try out the scrollwheel before buying, but the previously owner made sure to show me that music played (and it worked).
Anyways, after following your steps, the player works great (it’s only been 5 minutes, but I’m sure it’ll be fine now)!
Thank you!!!
THANK YOU!!! for your great step-by-step directions on cleaning the thumbwheel control. The problem was soooooo annoying. Even though my Sansa is a later model (E250) your directions and pictures were close enough that I was able to make the repair.
Thank you for your step-by-step. I have another problem and wondered if you ever had it too. My sansa does not recognize the computer hookup or connection. It charges, but that’s it. Thanks
Classy, you can go to the settings menu and under USB try changing to MSC or MTP if you are on MSC currently. The two that I owned never worked on MTP but worked well on MSC. With MSC your PC will see the Sansa like it would a USB thumb drive.
Just wanted to leave a word of thanks for the maintenance guide. The wheel on my e280 was playing up and even though I had an extended warranty, I was worried they’d just replace it with a v2 model that wouldn’t run Rockbox. So to avoid that I decided to give the dissassembly and cleaning a try, and now it’s working fine.
Yes, thanks so much for this guide! The wheel on my e260 has been gimmicky for a while now but I’ve been living with it as is because I like the player itself so much. Thought I was going to have to buy a new player soon, but now that the wheel is working perfectly again, I no longer have to budget that splurge into my graduate student stipend
Thanks again!
Thanks for the great info. I just cleaned my mouse on my e280. It took about 10 minutes and it is working great now. I can’t want for the Linux part of this site, Linux Rock!!
Thank you, thank you! No more skipping around for my scroll wheel, either. You saved me $100-200 on a new mp3 player (and the possible indignity of carrying around an ipod).
Hey Joustin,
Like everyone else my sansa was on the fritz. I went through your tutorial and did as instructed… and Whammo good as new if not better! My e260 is my only refuge from from this cold dark dungeon I call work. Thanks so much for your help!
Hi,
Thanks a lot!!
My Sansa had this crazy wheel problem and I completely abandoned it because of that. Your guide really made it work great now!
Thanks again!
Thanks so much for posting this information! My e280 was slowly “dying” but now, it’s like NEW! You rock!
